Coene’s Considerings
By: Chris & Linda Coene
August…Can you believe the Summer is almost over! Where did the summer go? With Chris hurting his knee we hardly rode at all, so I am really missing the people and the fun. The doctors are optimistic that he may be riding by September. So that is our good news of the day.
Now for August… did you know it is named for Augustus, the emperor of Rome from 19 BC until 14 AD. Just a little History lesson for the month.
The really big news this month is really broken into a lot of things.
RIDE FOR KIDS: Please make every effort to come and help and most of all ride in this wonderful charity ride. This is the GWRRA national charity so we need to make an added effort on this ride. We do this for the Kids who suffer from no fault of their own! For those who stick around to help clean up after the ride, there will probably be a short ride and a dinner stop somewhere. I am sorry Chris and I will not be able to go with you.
PIG ROAST: If you have not made your reservation yet, please do so ASAP! We need a count to confirm the size of the pig and everything else. Anyone wanting to bring some cookies to put out for munching please do so. We will just be putting these out after dinner to have with the Ice Cream. The ride will leave King's at 9:00 am and arrive at the Pig roast about 4:00. We will eat at 6:00 if you are coming directly to the Pig Roast. We do have some games we will be playing. Prizes will be awarded!!! If you still have Pig Roast tickets please bring the money and the ticket stubs to the Pig Roast.. Once we get the daily number we will attempt to call the winner that night (If they are not present).
DISTRICT RALLY: Register ahead so you can participate! We have registered for Chapter D to participate in some of the games on Friday. We are also in charge of judging the Bike Show on Saturday morning. Please let Chris or Ross know if you would like to help with this also. We have decided to wear Chapter "D" T-Shirts on Friday night and the 3 button shirts on Saturday night. If you have these, please participate. If not, that is OK, we want you there anyway! It is close so help support our Chapter, District, and State.
Well that is about all for this month. Please try to make the Ice Cream and Dinner rides as well as the weekend rides that are being held. Please call if you are planning on going to the J & T Ice cream ride. I just heard that they are closed that night so we will have to find another place to ride. I will call around and get that settled and send out an email notice.
Have a great August and RIDE SAFE!

My Many Thanks...from Debbie Rice
I just wanted to take a moment to say a great big thank you to Chapter D for the beautiful afghan that we received from you for our two years of serving as Chapter Directors. It is truly a beautiful item and we will treasure it for many years to come . For now it is draped over our living room couch, but that doesn’t let you admire the full picture, so it may be hung on one of the walls in Rich’s garage. For those of you who have never seen our garage, don’t get upset, Rich keeps it really neat. Thank you all once again for EVERYTHING !!!

Date & Location Change for the August Staff Meeting.
Because of the District Rally, August 20 - 23, our staff meeting has been moved up one week to August 13. The meeting location will be at Chris & Linda Coene’s residence, 1260 Woodland Road, Baden, PA. This is just a stone’s throw from
King’s
.
If you are planning to attend the staff meeting, please contact Chris & Linda to let them know. Their phone number is

Annual Pig Roast and Fundraiser
Our annual pig roast will be here before you know it. The date is August 15th. and if you haven’t sent in your reservations to Marilyn Banks yet, please do if you are planning to attend. We need to know a week before hand how many will be attending so we can order the right sized pig for roasting. We want to make sure everyone gets enough to eat. The flyer for the pig roast is included again in this month’s newsletter in case you have misplaced last month’s newsletter. The flyer is also available on our downloads web site at
www.codynparker.com/Downloads.
If you will be attending the pig roast, Linda is asking for cookie donations to go with the ice cream for dessert. All other foods will be provided.
Along with our annual pig roast, is our annual fundraiser. Dan & Beth Hildebrand still have a large number of tickets that must be sold so we can cover the winning ticket. If we don’t sell all the tickets, the chapter is still obligated to cover the winning ticket, which means the funds for our operating expenses will be greatly diminished. We are asking each member to take at least two books (10 tickets) to either buy or sell. The tickets are $2.00 each. If you have taken tickets to sell or buy, the staff thanks you. If you have not yet had a chance to get your tickets, please contact Dan or Beth at 724-352-3190. They will be glad to make arrangements to get the tickets to you.
The winning ticket will be based on the evening daily number drawn on August 15th, the day of our pig roast.

Humor of the
Month...Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart. He
was stiff legged and walking slowly.
One of the students said to his friend, “I'm sure the poor old man has Petry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that.'”
The other student said, “No, I don't think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks slowly and his legs are apart just as we learned in class.”
Since they couldn't agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him,
“We're medical students and couldn't help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn't agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?”
The old man said, “I'll tell you, but first you must tell me what you two fine medical students think.”
One of the students said, “I think it's Petry Syndrome.”
The old man said, “You thought... but you are wrong.”
Then the other student said, “I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome.”
The old man said, “You thought...... but you are also wrong.”
So they asked him, “Well, old timer, what do you have?”
The old man said, “I thought it was GAS... but I was wrong too.”
Thanks to Don & Linda Gibb for this month’s humor.

Vintage Grand Prix Security Detail
Four chapter members help provide security at the recent Vintage Grand Prix. Chris Coene, Ross Brown, Jim Bertuca, and Mike Ammerman spent the night in Schenley Park watching over some pretty expensive toys. Chris and Ross got to talk with one of the race competitors. It was interesting to find out how some of the racers got started.
It was a very quiet night except around 2:30 a.m. when one of the security posts reported gun fire in the vicinity. It was later determined that someone had some left over 4th of July fireworks. Other than that and listening to the Life Flight helicopers, it was an uneventful night.
The Vintage Grand Prix benefits children with autism and providing security for the race cars is very rewarding. Please keep this in mind when Andy Lucas comes to the chapter next year to ask for volunteers.
![]()

For the past eight years, Chapter D has been a very big volunteer supporter as well as a big money raiser since the Ride for Kids was first started in Pittsburgh. 2009 will once again show that Chapter D can be counted on to help make the Ride for Kids a success.
August 6 is the mandatory meeting for all volunteers. It will be held at the Cranberry Municipal building on Rochester Road at 6:00 p.m. A dinner ride to the North Park Lounge will follow the meeting.
August 8 is the chair setup at Slippery Rock College. We will leave King’s at 9:00 a.m. and ride the route the actual ride will take Sunday morning to Slippery Rock College. As we all know, Gold Wingers like to eat and I’m sure we will be stopping for lunch after the work is finished.
August 9 is the Ride for Kids. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. at the Home Depot in Cranberry. Volunteers will report earlier than that. We will find out the times at the mandatory meeting.
If you haven’t set up a First Giving website for raising funds, it still might not be too late to do so. Visit www.rideforkids.org for help with setting up your individual website. If you think it’s too late, please keep this fund raising tactic in the front of your mind for next year’s ride.
Different for this year will be the location of the premiums tent. It will be at Home Depot as well as at the end point. We expect more people to take advantage of it here and for that reason we will need some volunteers to help man the premiums tent. It will close when registration closes at 9:45 a.m. People who did not pick up their T-shirt and other goodies here will be able to so at Slippery Rock College. Please contact Gordon or Linda at 724-524-1500 if you can help in the premiums tent.
If you are not a volunteer, we hope to see you at the ride on August 9th.

July Gathering
It has been a long time since Chris wasn’t able to welcome any guests to the gathering, but that is what happened at July’s gathering. We still had a good turnout. Bob & Ruth Messenger are not new members, but it was nice to see them at the gathering. Unfortunately, they had a harrowing tale to tell about picking up a pop-up camper and getting it home. For unknown reasons, the camper wasn’t tracking properly and it caused Bob to lose control of the Gold Wing. The good thing is Bob & Ruth survived the crash with minor injuries, but the bad thing was the Gold Wing didn’t survive as well as Bob & Ruth. We’re just glad they’re okay and able to talk about it.
Tony & Irene Guerrera were also in attendance. Both are looking good except Tony has an oxygen bottle for a constant companion.
Chris then turned the mic over to Gordon who gave us some last minute updates for the Ride for Kids. Gordon asked for volunteers to help man a premiums tent at the beginning of the ride at Home Depot, which is new for this year. We expect more people to take advantage of it here than at the end point of the ride. If you are interested in helping in the premiums tent, please contact Gordon or Linda at 724-524-1500.
Roy Kinkead made a last minute plea to everyone who have not turned in his/her money for the District Rally raffle tickets. Roy needs to get the money and ticket stubs to District NOW! If you are still holding onto money for your tickets, please send it to Roy at 106 Rushford Lane, Butler, PA. 16002 or call him at 724-284-1421 to make other arrangements. Thank you Roy for managing this task.
Speaking of the District Rally, Chris & Linda need to know if you will be participating in the games at the rally. They need to let the rally committee know beforehand who will be competing for the chapter. If you plan to donate food to the Food Pantry in Johnstown at the District Rally, you can bring it with you to the Pig Roast on August 15. There is a grocery store next to the convention center in Johnstown so if you can also wait until you get there to purchase food for the Food Pantry. Money is also welcomed.
Dress code for the rally will be our yellow chapter T-shirts on Friday and the yellow chapter golf shirts for the Saturday evening meal. If you have the old turquoise colored chapter shirt, you can wear that as well. If you would like to purchase a chapter shirt, please contact Beth Hildebrand at 724-352-3190.
The chapter’s annual raffle ticket sales that support operation of the chapter is lagging. Dan & Beth Hildebrand have quite a few tickets left that need to be sold. Please call them if you have not received any tickets to sale or if you would like more. Dan & Beth said they would be glad to send them to you.
Rich Rice picked up the “Ultimate Street Strategies” book for this month.
Jim Schantz won the RFK’s raffle, which was a 450 watt portable radio/CD, which was donated by Jim Bertuca. Boomer Brown won the 50/50. Ralph Ferguson, Tom Banks, and Ray Feather won the lottery tickets and Glen Young won tickets for next month’s 50/50 drawing.

The Mis-adventures of “Wingman”
As told by Wingman to Renee Beck
Ron & Renee Beck recently took a two week trip out West along with some of their friends. Ron & Renee took one of the chapter’s adopted “children, Wingman.” This is the first installment of their trip as told by “Wingman” to his adopted parents, Ron & Renee.
Hello!
For those of you that don't know me, I'm Wingman. I was adopted, along w/ my sister & brother, by GWRRA Chapter D. Because we have so many parents, we each have an opportunity to go on adventures. Ron & Reneé Beck were nice enough to include me in their 2 week excursion out west. I'm documenting the trip; so I can relive every moment for my sister & brother.
We are heading for Cooke City, MT in the first leg of the journey. The 2nd leg is to Lead, SD.
Cast of characters: Ron & Reneé Beck - Honda Gold Wing; Don Beck - Yamaha Royal Star Venture; Mole - Harley Street Glide; Ron Meyers - Harley Street Glide; Frank Deonoto- Harley Ultra Classic; V. Todd "Skip Jr." Schaffer - Honda Gold Wing; Skip Sr. Shaffer - Harley 1200 Sportster; Ron & Bonnie Gilkey - Harley Ultra Classic; Bob Gilkey - Harley Ultra Classic; Dave & Cathy Mowery - Honda Gold Wing
Day 1 Saturday July 11th
Alarm goes off @ 4:15 a.m.: Reneé forgot to set hers; so when Ron's went off, she went running to get all the last minute things done and be on the bike by 5:30. One of those things was to insure I made it to the bike. She accomplished that, as well as cooking breakfast, making the beds, cleaning the dishes (her brother-in-law Don dried and put them away…how nice). While all this was going on, Ron made certain all the luggage made it to the bike and that everything we planned to take was there.
Depart @ 5:30 a.m.: Head to Moles house (yes that is a person's nick name!) He's an entertaining person. I'll tell you more about him later. We met up w/ Ron Meyers at Mole's and waited for a phone call. The phone call came in around 5:50 a.m. Our Friends from GWRRA Chapter G (Dave & Cathy Mowery) called with the good news that they were joining us….Last minute surprise!! Yeah!!
We leave Mole's around 5:55 a.m. on our way to Cranberry to meet Frank…another cool guy. He is a sweet Italian older gentleman. He has been friends with Skip Sr. for well over 50 years. WOW!!
Met Frank @ Denny's in Cranberry and Depart around 7 a.m. to meet the rest of our crew on the PA Turnpike @ the 1st Service Station after Interstate 80 (Skip Schaffer Sr., Skip Schaffer Jr., Ron, Bonnie, and Bob Gilkey). They were suppose to be there around 8 a.m.. They were close…8:10 a.m. they arrived. A minor adjustment to the trailer that had 2 bikes on it and we were on our way around 9:00 a.m….YEAH!!!!
Dave & Cathy were waiting for us @ Mile Marker 240 Service Station (right after I-90). We were keeping their joining us a surprise from our friend Skip Jr. Well, we got a surprise of our own. It didn't rain, IT POURED!!! We were so close to the Service Station (less than 2 miles) and we got dumped on. Finally made it to the service station and put our rain gear on. We waited out the big stuff, for the most part; then felt it was safe to go…Well we didn't get more than 2 miles then the weather turned crappy again. Crappy isn't the best word….we got pummeled by the rain. It was raining so hard we could barely see in front of us. We made it to the next service station and waited again. After about an hour it let up and we went on our merry way. It was clear sailing at this point. We were at mile 13 in Ohio and pulled off to get fuel. One of our buddies (Frank) didn't see us get off the turnpike; so he went straight through. We all fueled up and got a snack & a drink. As we were sitting there, we got a phone call from Skip Sr. Frank ran out of fuel @ the tool booth. We knew he was low on fuel, didn't know he was that low. There was a gas can in the truck, but unfortunately no one thought to fill it up prior to the trip; so Ron Gilkey found a gas can for sale at the station we were out and filled it up. Reneé was nice enough to carry it to where Frank was at. Good thing it was only 13 miles.
We get to the toll booth w/ gas can in hand. It is completely backed up. Why, no one knows. We finally get through the line and hand the can to Frank. He is quite relieved to see us. Question…how many people does it take to fill a gas tank….It looked like 5 or more. I lost track
After we get the gas in the bike, we saddle up and get to the closest gas station to fill up.
Now, we are on our way….so we thought….we get to the Indiana ticket booth and none of us can get a fricken' ticket out of the machine!!! Our tempers were starting to flare up. We all had to call for help….traffic backed up even more. Talk about a rough couple of hours.
Everyone seemed to be worried about getting through Gary Indiana area. All I heard was that we'll be sitting in the construction zone for hours; so I anticipated taking a long nap. Guess what…no construction. We made it through without any issue. According to the people that have driven this way in the past "that was the easiest getting through that area, ever". I'm thinking that's pretty cool. If everyone would have listened to Mole, they would have known that there would be no problem.
We made it through the Illinois toll booth without incident. Onto Iowa…..I-80 isn't much better here either. Pretty boring.
It's now getting close to 8:30 pm. We decided to stop for the evening in Coralville, IA. We put on over 700 miles the first day. WHEW…I'm exhausted.
Further adventures of “Wingman” continued next month.

Must Have Tools for the Motorcycle Enthusiast
By: Linda Coene
Tool, by definition this is a device to help do a job or chore and make it easier. Then why do so many tools end up in my kitchen? My Motor Cycle Rider tool definitions for August are:
Hydraulic Floor Jack: Used for lowering a motorcycle to the ground after you have installed your new front disk brake setup, trapping the jack handle firmly under the front fender.
Hose Cutter: A tool used to cut hoses 1/2 inch too short

We would like to personally thank everyone who participated in the Ride For Kids Raffles this past year. We collected a total of $1048.00! And we couldn't have done it without all of you! Whether you bought tickets, donated an item to be raffled, or had just given cash donations. It's for a very worthy cause! We hope to see everyone at the ride, Sunday, August 9, 2009 when we turn the money in!

From the Chapter Educator
By: Ross Brown
A cyclist is southbound on Mars-Evans City Rd. Looking over his shoulder he sees storm clouds to his northwest. Storms were forecast for later that day, not early afternoon. He curses the weatherman. Head down, hands on the drops he hammers the pedals for - at least shelter - if not home.
As he starts downhill toward railroad road tracks at the bottom, the road is already wet. Flying down the hill he remembers the tracks are wheel crushing rough. He hesitates thinking he'll bunny hop them at speed then thinks better of it and brakes. The wheels step over the first rail but the second is slick. The front wheel slides out. Incredulous, he realizes he's falling, tucks his shoulder waits for impact. "That wasn't so bad" he thought as his elbow, upper arm and shoulder hit the ground and then in virtually the same instant his head - like the tail of a whip- cracks to the asphalt. He hears his helmet crunch and thinks, "OH MY Head!" Pressure builds in his skull. He reaches for his chin strap lets his helmet roll from his head -doesn't relieve the hurt.
Could have been a few seconds or a few minutes, he hears a female voice 'call 9-1-1!' Becoming more aware of his surroundings he sees several cars had already stopped, he calls out, "No, I'm okay! Just help me up." A man starts to lift his bicycle, "Stop", he calls out, "that one's still attached." He twists his foot free of the pedal and woozily stands up. Reaching for his helmet he sees it is dented and thinks, "that could be my skull". He's able to convince everyone he's okay and mounts his bike and rides off. He doesn't get far as his head is throbbing and his muscles start to spasm. He calls for a ride. He spends the rest of the day on his recliner nursing his headache.
This rider was fortunate, in a few days his head no longer throbbed when he stood or moved too quickly. He thinks of people who have had a life changing injury or even died from similar events and considers himself blessed.
This is isn't to tell you to wear a helmet. But realize it only takes an instant to perhaps change your life forever.

From Our 2009 Chapter Couple of the Year
By: Jim & Cathy Schantz
Well, as I sit inside on this rainy day, why not write my article for the newsletter. Jim and I had two nice ride weekends to speak of. First, kudos to Don Weaver and Chapter G for a great All Chapters weekend. The food was outstanding and the omelets in a bag were the biggest talk of the weekend. Despite the weathermen trying to ruin a weekend for all, the weather held out. We headed to Waterford, PA on Friday with our rain gear on and only had a few sprinkles. After dinner a few of us headed to Presque Isle for what else but ice cream. Saturday Chapter G had several ride sign up sheets that filled up quickly, but again opted to ride up to Conneaut Lake OH to the White Turkey for lunch. What a quaint and nostalgic place to visit. And they serve a mean root beer float. After our short ride, back to the campground for an ice cream social @ 3:00 and another great evening dinner and Elvis entertainment. We capped off the evening with a campfire at The Mitchell's campsite with Rich and Deb Rice joining us. And before we knew it Sunday had arrived and back home. And as July comes to an end overall we had a few memorable rides. So now we say hello to August. Jim and I got ready for the ride on the 1st and the last thing I did was check my email and to my dismay the ride has been cancelled. Jim and I headed over to King's anyway and talked what we can do if nobody shows up. By the time 9:00 arrived there were 7 bikes, nobody else read their emails. So we talked and decided Kinzua Dam would be our destination. Jim volunteered to lead the ride. He had them on some back roads up in Tidioute as we headed to Richards near Youngsville for a great lunch. Then off to Kinzua for a relaxing stop. We knew of Bob's Trading Post in Kane for ice cream and that became our next stop. After over 300 miles for the day our little impromptu trip was memorable. Jim and I hope everyone enjoyed their day with us and we did with them. Until the next ride be safe.

From Our NW Assistant District Director
A Gathering of Friends (and other stuff)
The weekend of July 24-26 presented an opportunity for GWRRA brothers and sisters to enjoy the All Chapter’s West event hosted by Chapter PA-G. The hosts provided a great venue with the Sparrow Pond camping facility and many hotels nearby to accommodate those who don’t camp. It is fun to be part of such a successful event and I am sure I am speaking for all in thanking PA-G for doing such a great job of entertaining the rest of us. I marveled as I watched the association’s members enjoying the great food and camaraderie that is always part of Goldwinger’s getting together to share our sport of motorcycling. The smiles and laughter are why I go to these things and both were abundant everywhere I walked.
The District Rally is only a few weeks away. I cannot wait to see old friends and meet new ones. Every rally takes on a life of its own and so I encourage you to come and be part of this one. With Dinosaurs running rampant in Bedrock and generations of Flintstones coming to one town, it is going to be something that you may never get a chance to see again.
I want to remind everyone that Chapter PA-O is having their 20th Anniversary this year and the party is on October 10. Information for this event is on their webpage at www.pachaptero.com. I invite all of you to come be part of this celebration.
I want to personally thank each and every one of you that have sold and purchased the tickets being sold to support the PA District. Without your help we would not be able to operate so please accept my gratitude in keeping the PA District alive and well.
I will close with this one thought. You only get out of GWRRA what you put into it. Want more out of your membership…get involved!
See you all in Johnstown!

From the District Director
This has been a very busy month for Evelyn and myself. This past weekend we attended All Chapters West and had a great time. There were about 180 persons in attendance and the food and activities were great. Also the rides they had planned were fantastic.
We want to say that those of you who missed All Chapters West and East really missed a good time. Chapters H and G did a fantastic job of planning these events and the attendance at both showed that the change of splitting the event was a good one.
With the Rally less than one month away, things around the Stone house are really buzzing with activity making the final preparations for the event. We want to thank Chapter “T” for hosting the stuffing of the packets for the Rally. We had a great time and had lots of Good food and good fellowship.
Chuck & Evelyn Stone, District Directors
