Coene's Considerings
By: Chris & Linda Coene, Chapter Directors

March 2009…Remember when we thought this would never be here and now it is….Are you ready to ride? I know I cannot wait! And we have our first official ride this month too. It is all coming together pretty well.

When I ask if you are ready, I know you are all READY mentally, but how about the bike? Have you checked it out, tires, fluids, brakes, etc. You know, all those really important little things that keep us safe. I hope you have. I know it has been really cold this winter and a lot of us do not have nice heated garages to work in, plus the nasty little flu bug put some of us down for several weeks.

Now is the time to start looking into getting everything in line for riding, bike, gear, and your own well being. I just want this year to be a safe one for all.
Don't forget that we have a lot of rides that still need ride leaders and co-leaders. Let us know if you would like to help out. We also have purposely left several weekend days blank for the old fashioned “impromptu” ride. Sometimes we get so tied up in creating the perfect ride that we forget about the fun of just riding for fun's sake. If there is not a ride scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday and it looks like a good day to ride, we will be meeting at King's at 9:00 am. Whoever is there, we will ride. Chris and I will not be there every time although we really wish we could, but we will be there in spirit. This also goes for some of the weekend rides. Not everyone can go on every weekend ride, so try to get a ride started and meet to see if anyone else is interested.
Most of all, get ready to have some FUN!

Thank you.

From Our 2009 Chapter Couple of the Year
By: Jim & Cathy Schantz

Well, we had a very busy couple months. Jim and I visited with Chapter O and attended a picnic at North Park with Chapter P. After these two visits Jim and I realized how lucky we are to be part of such an active group. We had a great time at our Anniversary Party. We saw alot of new faces at the party and hope we said Hi to you. If not, our apologies. Please, in the future if you see Jim or me at a meeting or on a ride, take time to say hello. I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped with the planning of the party. Thank you Chris, Linda, Marilyn, Tom, Mike, and Dar for all that you do for Chapter D and GWRRA. And a special thank you to Phil for your beautiful jewelry box. Thank you to those who gave donations for the Chinese Auction. This event would not have been a success without your involvement. Well, Jim and I will be at the bowling challenge on March 1st with Chapter P. We also have our first function on March 14th and 15th in Bedford. We are going to attend a PA District Couple of the Year get together. We are interested in seeing what other chapter COY's are doing. We look forward to seeing you at the next gathering on March 26th.

Our Special Thanks to All

Thanks to all of the members who gave such generous donations for the Ride for Kid's raffle. When I built the jewelry box this year I wanted it to be a little more special than the one I built last year, and as I have seen by your donations and comments it was. Brownie and June answered the e-mail we sent out along with the video of the building of the jewelry box. They called to ask me to buy $10 in tickets for them and they were the lucky winners.

This August, Dar and I will give the $245.00 we raised to the Ride for Kids possibly with some more donations as well.

Congratulations to June and Brownie. I hope you will enjoy the heart shaped jewelry box as much as I enjoyed building it, and for such a worthwhile cause.

And by the way Brownie, I am going to be waiting for June to give me a big hug when we present both of you with your jewelry box.

Thanks to all of you,
Phil and Darlene Pirozzi

Humor of the Month...Nine Words Women Use
1. Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.
2. Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.
3. Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.
4. Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!
5. Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)
6. That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
7. Thanks: If a woman is thanking you, do not question her, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome'. That will bring on a 'whatever').
8. Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying "YOU'RE IN DEEP SNEAKERS!"
9. Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.

Thanks to Marilyn Banks for this month's humor.

Anniversary Party

If anyone is keeping track, this is the second year in a row that we have not had to fight the elements to or from the party. Although I must say it did feel a little unnatural wearing shorts and seeing snow flurries at the same time. "Wearing shorts?" Well, you have to remember that the theme for the anniversary party was "A Beach Bash." We saw a wide assortment of "beach" wear. No string bikini's though.

Our guests for the evening were Dana Hartle, the NW Assistant District Director, and Dave & Debbie Koch (friends of Dale Beighley).

The food was great and the games afterwards kept everyone entertained. We had the fish toss, pick the numbered ducky, flamingo toss, and my favorite, the kissing booth. Cathy & Jim Schantz gave out a lot of hugs and kisses.

Marilyn Banks did a great job with the Chinese Auction. Phil Pirozzi made a very nice mahogany jewel box, which was raffled off to help the Ride for Kids. Phil & Darlene collected over $200 for the RFK's. Brownie Statler was the winner of the jewelry box. I'm sure June is enjoying it very much.
If you wanted a beach picture, Ray Feather had his photography equipment set up with a green backdrop. Ray will do some photographic magic and make it look like we were actually on a beach. Chris & Linda, Cindy Young, Marilyn Banks, Cathy Schantz, & Dar A. did a great job with the decorations and center pieces.

I think everyone had a great time. Mary Vaupel won the 50/50. Chris Coene, Loretta Mitchell, and Dave Koch won lottery tickets. We had a special gift to give to Deb & Rich Rice for leading us the past two years, but they were not in attendance and will have to wait until the March gathering to accept it.

From Our Chapter Educator
By: Ross Brown

Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Fastnacht Day,, Pancake Day, whatever you call it, it's the last day before the start of Lent, a time of fasting and penance. So here I am contemplating those pounds I've put on over the winter and hoping that I'll soon be able to get on the road, not only on the Wing but my bicycle as well.

I for one tend to gain weight very easily. I've sworn off donuts; hardly ever eat French fries and cut way back on red meat and still the pounds come easily. My only salvation is cycling. Guess you could call it pedaling penance. Done with proper fit, form, and technique it is easy on joints and great aerobic exercise. I can personally attest that it lowers blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides and total cholesterol while increasing your good cholesterol. I've found it improves my mood and relieves stress and my joints feel better when they're worked. But, even with all those benefits I find it harder and harder each spring to get started again after a long winter layoff. The first 6 to 8 weeks of riding season aren't always fun, and sometimes the suffering seems too great.

Miraculously, additional motivation came via an article by Dr. Flash Gordon in February's 'Motorcycle Consumer News' about weight loss. It pretty much talks about the same things I've mentioned above but there was this one additional benefit I've never thought of; Each 7 lbs. of weight loss is the equivalent of an extra horse power on your motorcycle! Now I'm REALLY psyched! Where's that bicycle!

Brain Teaser #2 • Everything that is presented to me I return at once. Although helpless I can wound; although speechless I can encourage. People are afraid of my fabled revenge so I am seldom hurt. Children adore me. A widely known character once went through me and discovered an amazing country. What am I? Answer

Chapter P's Gathering & Winter Picnic

On February 15, a few Chapter D members visited Chapter P for their monthly gathering. After the gathering, we proceeded to North Park to join them for their annual Winter Picnic. It was a little on the nippy side, but we had a good turnout. Although the temperature was in the upper 20's, one brave soul, Charlie Cox, showed up on his Gold Wing. Before we left the park, we saw two other motorcycles that braved the cold weather. Thanks to Roy Hoak, who brought a portable propane heater, we had a little heat to gather around. There was also a gathering around the charcoal grills where Karen Miller and Jayne Minsterman cooked the hot dogs and heated the chicken noodle soup. We had plenty of other things to eat and we thank Chapter P for letting us join them. Check out the pictures at the end of the newsletter.

MS Escape to the Lake

I want to thank everyone who has signed up so far to take part in the annual MS bike-a-thon. We still have a couple months left before the ride, so the sign-up sheet will be available at each gathering. If you can't make any of the gatherings and would like to volunteer, please call Mike Ammerman at 412-795-6685 or send me an e-mail at auwinger@verizon.net.

Chapter D has had great turnouts in the past to help fight the cause of MS and I would like to see us continue to stay the course.

Chapter O Visit

On February 8th, a few Chapter D members made the trip to Kittanning to visit Chapter O at their new gathering location, Theresa's Royle Allegheny. The gathering was early so it was breakfast time. I don't know what their afternoon and evening meals are like, but if they are anything like their breakfast, this would be a good place to eat if you are in the area. The restaurant is located on Rt. 268 just before the ice cream stand where we captured the Traveling Plaque from Chapter O a couple years ago.

Because of the influx of Chapter D members and a visit from Dana Hartle, NW AD/D, we gave Bob & Bev Long a good excuse to have the gatherings in a larger room. We enjoyed the time we spent with Chapter O and we look forward to a return visit.

Bowling Challenge
By: Mike Ammerman

Last year after our bowling challenge, I promised myself I would at least bowl a couple games to be ready for this year's challenge. Well, that didn't happen. I do want to know though, how many broke out the Bengay after getting home?

We had a total of 24 participants; 10 from Chapter P and 14 from Chapter D with two of those participants cheering his/her respective chapter on to victory.
I'm sure everyone had a story to tell about their annual bowling experience. With that in mind, I'll relate my story. If I could have strung a game together using only my tenth frame, I would have bowled close to a 250. We bowled three games and my tenth frame combined for all three games consisted of seven straight strikes and one spare. And one of those frames of the three games included picking up a 7-9 split. Needless to say, leading up to the tenth frame was less than mediocre. Not too many gutter balls, but lots of open frames. Everyone on our two lanes (Dan, Beth, Loretta, Jim, Cathy, Kyle, and Carl Erb (Chp P) did pretty good. We all had our fair share of strikes and spares. And yes, gutter balls too. All in all, I think everyone had a good time.

After the challenge we retired to Uncle Joe's across the street for something to eat while Linda tallied up the scores to see who might move onto the professional bowling circuit. Top game honors went to Roy Kinkead (Chp D) with a 171. Top female scorer was Pat Meyer with 151 (Chp P). Randy Dolton (Chp P) had the top total score of 479. And the winner of the bowling challenge (drum roll please) is Chapter P with an average pin total of 379. Chapter D was very close with an average of 377. If I had only picked up that last strike of the last frame, Chapter D could have been victorious this year (head bowed in shame).

Ah, but there is always next year's challenge to look forward to and who knows, maybe I'll get some practice in before hand (or not).

News from National, Regional, and District

Executive Director:
Changing Our Focus for 2009
So this year we need to change our focus back to riding and having fun and getting away from the fundraising.
GWRRA is trying to assist Members in every way we can. . A Member can now make two payments, one each month, instead of paying the entire amount at one time. . We've also added some very nice discount programs with Avis/Budget Car Rental and Office Max, and we are continuing to look for discount insurance and health programs. We have continued to give a $15 discount for three year renewal with Rescue Plus and our new recruiting program is giving $5 gift certificates for every two new recruits.
Melissa Eason, Executive Director, has contracted with Avis and Budget Rent A Car to provide an exclusive discount for GWRRA Members. This includes not only Members in the United States* and Canada but our International Members as well.
Phoenix, AZ (January 1, 2009) Phoenix, AZ Melissa Eason, Executive Director of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), announced a new Discount Program for the Association. The program will begin January 1, 2009, and will be open to all Members of GWRRA. Members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), the world's largest single-marque social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing and Valkyrie motorcycles, will be eligible to take their Office Max Retail Connect Card to any Office Max retail store location and receive discounts on a long list of products. This Retail Connect Card can be obtained by downloading it from the GWRRA Wing World website at http://www.wingworldmag.com/ or cutting out the appropriate page in their February, 2009, Wing World magazine. Then, each Member can take the page to their local Office Max retail store to have a permanent, laminated card prepared.
The special number on each card is then scanned and GWRRA's special pricing will automatically appear at the register when you are ready to purchase your products. There is a long list of products that are specially priced…too many to list here. For the OfficeMax retail store nearest your location, visit www.officemax.com and use the store finder.

Learning Something New
It is a standing joke in our house that I am not mechanically inclined. I can patch and temporarily fix about anything with Gorilla tape, Gorilla glue or just plain old black electrical tape. You would be surprised at how long you can hold that thingy that holds the lawnmower wheel on with electrical tape. My poor husband, who on the rare occasion that he gets home from work before dark, has to fix what I have temporarily fixed and believe me, I have been told on more than one occasion that “it isn't fun”.
Well, I learned two new things the other day. I had the television on while I was working on the computer and just happened to look up at the screen on the television. Lo and behold, the person on the television was showing you how to keep your plastic wrap from falling out of the box while you are trying to use it. Now this has been a problem for me for several years. Well, it seems that on the sides of the plastic wrap box there are little tabs that you push in. This keeps the plastic wrap in the box while you are trying to tear a piece off. Well, being me, I had to go to the kitchen and try it. It actually works! The second thing that I learned, after my husband threatened me when he couldn't get the black tape off the pieces that I was holding together on my lawnmower, is that if you have a toolkit, which I do, and learn to use the tools that are in it, you can usually fix something so that it will actually hold together. Guess what, it actually works.
What I am actually trying to say is that there are so many resources available to use that can help you be a better volunteer leader. If you have a question about something, just ask. The District Trainers have information readily available that may answer your question. If the resources that we have do not cover your particular question, believe me, we will take the necessary steps to find the answer for you.
Usually in early Spring or late Fall the Districts try to hold a Horizon Program for prospective volunteer leaders. The Horizon Program covers almost everything that a Chapter Director may encounter during his tenure. I would definitely recommend the Horizon Program to anyone that wishes to someday be a volunteer leader or to anyone that would just like to know more about our great organization. Also, some of the Districts have been holding fun shops that cover leadership training and rider education. If you would like to receive information about an upcoming Horizon Program or fun shop, please contact your District Trainer.

GET WELL:
Pat Cole, District Newsletter Editor slipped and fell on the ice 3 weeks ago and broke her right arm. She is well on the mend now, but cards can be sent to: 111 Wetmore Street - Warren, PA 16365.
The District sends well wishes to Pat and everyone else that has not been feeling up to par lately.
Keystone State Rally:
Have you sent in your registration yet?
Just a reminder that again this year as last year “To compete in any rally event, you must be fully registered for the rally.“, Example: Bike Show, Light Show, Chapter Competitions, Hospitality Room and COY Competition. NO FULL REGISTRATIONS WILL BE SOLD AT THE RALLY!

Rally Raffle Tickets: This year our fundraiser will again be a “CASH BONANZA” with 40 chances to win. There will be (2) $1,000.00 winners, (2) $500.00 winners, (4) $250.00 winners, (10) $100.00 winners and (22) $50.00 winners.
The tickets will sell for $5.00 each and we are asking ALL the chapters to support this fundraiser for 2009.
In addition, 50% of the net profits will be divided among the 24 chapters based on the number of tickets each sold to do with as they see fit. So the more tickets the chapter sells the bigger their percent of return in the final distribution.

Someone Special Award: Do not forget to submit your nomination for the Someone Special Award. Nominations are to be submitted to us no later than July 17.
Food Drive:
We have selected the West End Food Pantry in Johnstown as the organization that we will be supporting with a non-perishable food drive as part of our Keystone State Rally.
We will be looking for support from ALL OUR CHAPTERS to make sure this very worthy event is a real success. You folks did a Great Job last year and we are hoping for the same this year.

PA District Rider Educator & MAD Coordinator:
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all are keeping warm and well. Unless you like winter sports, there's not too much to do except curl up in front of the fire, and read Wing World. Dream about what trips to take this summer. Seems there has been a lot of ice this winter, which has resulted with some falls and a few broken bones. The usual amount of accidents, therefore, I hope everyone has been extra cautious, giving plenty of time to get where you are going. Seems ice and snow is more dangerous of you're hurrying. Not much to write about, except to wish you all well and SAFE. Remember your Valentine.
Be Safe, Mae

From Our Northwest Assistant District Director

March
-verb,( used without object)
1. to walk with regular and measured tread, as soldiers on parade; advance in step in an organized body.
2. to walk in a stately, deliberate manner.
3 to go forward; advance; proceed: Time marches on.

The above definition came from the internet. The parts of the definition I liked most were “advance in step in an organized body” and “to go forward; advance; proceed”. I think both of these explain what is going on within the Pennsylvania District. People are working in step as an organized body providing an opportunity for all of us to enjoy the motto of “Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. We are also moving forward trying new things and going to new places. Time does march on and we are in constant motion. Old friends leaving and new friends coming seem to be a common theme within GWRRA, and the PA District is no exception. One constant that is not changing is the dedication to FUN. Don't believe me, come to the District Rally and see for yourselves. Go visit another chapter or better yet take part in one of their scheduled rides this year.
The Horizon's training program is being held in Clarion PA on April 4th and 5th. If you have an interest in learning leadership skills, talk to your chapter director about attending. They have all the information regarding the class and how to attend. I especially encourage you if you are considering moving into a leadership role within your chapter in the coming years. This is a great class to prepare you to lead your chapter forward.
We had a great time at Chapter N's Anniversary Party. They had an entertainer who presented a fantastic show of jokes and impersonations of Dean Martin singing Dino's greatest hits.
Chapter D put winter away for an evening as we celebrated summer with their Beach Party. Lots of fun beachwear but I give kudos to the gentleman who came wearing his wet suit. Not too many of us can pull that off at our age without embarrassing ourselves. The Chinese auction made me a winner of a couple of nice gifts. The best gift was the time spent with them as we left winter behind if for only a few hours.
I encourage everyone to support the District and also your own chapter by selling your raffle tickets. It benefits many causes and helps the district to provide the annual rally for your fun. It can also help your own chapter with your fundraising by getting back a portion of the proceeds for your chapters use or for your chapter to donate as they see fit. The more we sell, the more each chapter gets back. I encourage everyone to push hard to move all 200 tickets that were given to your Chapter Director. Each ADD has 200 tickets more if you are running out and wish to make more money for your chapter.

Dana and Danise Hartle, NW ADD's

Olive Garden Dinner Ride - March 10

Our first dinner ride of the season is scheduled for March 10 at the Olive Garden in Monroeville. Since everyone is accustomed to dining in the Cranberry area, Monroeville may seem like an alien planet. With that in mind, click on map for a location of the restaurant. The Olive Garden is located on Mall Blvd marked by the arrow on the map. William Penn Highway is business route 22. If you are coming from the turnpike, you will be turning left onto Mall Blvd at a traffic light. Chucky-E-Cheese will be on your left prior to this traffic light. There is also a high-end car dealership (Jaguar)  on the left.

You can meet at King's and leave at 6:00 p.m. or meet at the restaurant at 7:00 p.m.

A little More Humor...

Psychiatrists vs. Bartenders

Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night, so I went to a shrink and told him..."I've got problems."
Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared.. I think I'm going crazy.'
'Just put yourself in my hands for one year,' said the shrink. 'Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.'
'How much do you charge?' 'Eighty dollars per visit,' replied the doctor. ' I'll sleep on it,' I said.
Six months later the doctor met me on the street. 'Why didn't you ever come to see me about those fears you were having?' he asked.
'Well, eighty bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup!'
'Is that so!' With a bit of an attitude he said, 'and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?'
'He told me to cut the legs off the bed! - Ain't nobody under there now!!!'

Who needs shrinks...go have a drink and talk to your bartender!

Thanks to Jim Thomas for this additional humor.
