Coene’s Considerings
By: Chris & Linda Coene
May,,, we have been waiting so long and now it is really here. Riding Season!
I hope you are all ready for some great rides. We have a lot planned and also some free riding days that will take us where the wind wants us to go. Just be there ready to ride!
Just a quick update on our "adopted" peanuts. They seem to be doing a lot of traveling. One has been to Myrtle Beach, one to Aruba, one all over Florida, one to New York City, as well as local places we have taken them. If you are planning a trip please see if you can stuff one in the trunk somewhere and get some pictures. We need pictures of them everywhere. As long as there is a Bike or a Chapter D member in the picture, it is good. Having a picture of the baby at a national Park, Scenic site, etc. will be cool. Thanks for all the support in this endeavor.
Well, I am cutting this short. Both Chris and I are down with horrible colds (no it is not the Swine Flu) so we may not be on some of the early may rides but we will be seeing you soon.
Be safe, drive safe, and have fun!

From Our Chapter Educator
By: Ross Brown
Not the recommended way to wake one's Wing from hibernation I suppose, but a couple of weeks ago Theresa wanted to visit her mother in Orbisonia and I very much didn't want to spend six hours or so in the car . Despite the cool start that morning the weather was going to be dry and mild. So I got up early pushed the bike out of the garage for the first time since mid-November and started it up. Recalling Brownie's tale of helping a rider who fell when his rear brake locked up on the first trip down the driveway of spring, I thought I'd better take Brownie's advice and check the lights, controls, air pressure in the tires and levers. Then I rode to the end of the street and back, everything checked out fine. We connected our Gerbings and headed out.
The plan was to get there around lunch time, visit in the afternoon and head for home around 5. Well, 5 came and Theresa's sister and brother-in-law mentioned going to dinner and of course it wasn't hard to convince us to go along. We didn't leave Orby until 7 PM. This means most of the ride home will be in the dark. I don't particularly care for night riding much anymore. Did you know that a 50 year old's iris only admits half the light of a 20 year old's. Explains why people our age don't care for night driving or riding.
Although we didn't get home until 10 PM the ride was uneventful. Our first ride of the season -after a 5 month layoff on a 7 year old bike with 70,000 miles on it- was over 300 miles and partly in the dark on Pennsylvania's potholed roads. We enjoyed our trip but I wouldn't recommend it as a first ride of the year. A short trip to a big parking lot and some riding practice followed by a ride to Dairy Queen would be what I recommend. I think I'll make a point of it next year. Maybe!

Humor of the Month... Recently received e-mal
Subject: FW: CDC
The Center for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.
This virus is called Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK).
If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues or anyone else via any means whatsoever - DO NOT TOUCH IT!!! This virus will wipe out your private life entirely. If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises.
Take two good friends to the nearest liquor store and purchase one or both of the antidotes - Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.
You should immediately forward this medical alert to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is, sadly, controlling your life. Get help immediately!
Thanks to Marty Miller, Chpater P Director, for this month’s humor.

Coraopolis Memorial Day Parade
We will once again participate in the Coraopolis Memorial Day Parade on May 25th. Those wishing to ride in the parade will meet at the Sports complex on the end of Nevill Island closest to Coraopolis at 12:00 p.m. Cheryl Snatchko will then lead us to the parade starting point.
There will be refreshments after the parade at the local American Legion or we can go elsewhere for lunch. We can make that decision while we are waiting for the parade to start.

Ride Changes for May
There are two ride changes for May. The progressive ride that was scheduled for May 23rd has been moved to May 24th. A poker run ride has been added for May 23rd. This ride is being sponsored by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) at the Zelienople airport to benefit their Rides for Kids, not to be confused with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Ride for Kids in August. The EAA provides airplane rides for kids. The poker run is in memorial to a deceased member of the group and a close friend of Chris & Linda.
To summarize, the two date changes for rides are:
May 23 - EAA Poker Run
May 24 - Progressive Ride
Contact Chris Coene at 724-776-2113 for details concerning the poker run.

District Raffle Tickets
Roy Kinkead still has books of District Rally raffle tickets to hand out. If you have not received any tickets to sale, please see Roy at the next gathering. It is very important that the chapter sales our allotted tickets. Not only does it benefit the District, but the chapter as well because we will receive a portion of the money back according to how many tickets we sell.
So, please see Roy at your earliest convenience. Thank you.

April Gathering
Chris welcomed guests Dana Hartle (NW AD/D), Mel Lufsey (AC/D of Chapter I), Marty Miller (C/D of Chapter P), and a new member, Don King (a friend of Emil
Lederer).
After going over the past rides of last month, Chris turned the mike over to Dana who presented Chris & Linda with their certificate of appointment to Chapter Directors. Dana also introduced Mel, who is Chapter I’s MS Escape to the Lake coordinator. Thanks to Mel, we will have a very good showing from Chapter I in June for the MS bike ride. We will be meeting them at Cochranton during the ride and at Edinboro College because they will be assisting with the ride on Sunday as well.
Chris & Linda presented Deb & Rich with the afghan from the chapter in appreciation of Deb & Rich’s dedication and hard work they did for the chapter during their two year rein as Chapter Directors. Thank you again, Deb &
Rich.
Mike spoke briefly about the upcoming MS Escape to the Lake bicycle ride and he thanked everyone for volunteering their time for the June 6 & 7th bicycle ride. He also requested a few volunteers for a mini MS ride that was held on May 2nd to support Phil Keoghan, who was riding a bicycle across the US to gather donations to support the fight against MS. Phil is also the host of The Amazing Race TV show.
Gordon spoke about the Ride for Kids and asked for help with getting information about the Ride for Kids out to the motorcycling public. If you are at any motorcycle rallies, motorcycle shops, or just meet another motorcyclist, please mention the Ride for Kids. The more people that know about the ride will mean a better turnout for the ride. The next RFK’s visitation meeting is May 13th at 6:30 p.m. at King’s in Cranberry.
Ross, our Chapter Educator, spoke about the upcoming ERC (experienced rider course) on May 16th. If you are planning to attend this course, please contact Ross at 412-767-4972 for details. You need to be a Knoch High School before 8:00 a.m. The class starts at 8:00 a.m., but you need to fill out paperwork before the class can begin. Brownie gave Ross a motorcycle book, Ultimate Riding Strategies, to be read and passed around the chapter. Each person who reads the book is asked to sign it and then pass it to the next person.
Chris mentioned the Vintage Grand Prix security detail for July 19th. Chapters P & D will be working the midnight to 6:00 a.m. shift on July 19th. The Vintage Grand Prix benefits the Allegheny School for autistic children.
Roy Kinkead made another plea for everyone to take a book(s) of District Rally raffle tickets. Please see Roy if you have not received any tickets. Roy also mentioned that if you are planning to go on his Smoke Hole Ride, you must make your own reservations at Smoke Hole.
Ross Brown won the 50/50 drawing. Don Somerfield, Loretta Mitchell, and Renee Beck won lottery tickets and Chuck Bowen won tickets for next month’s 50/50 drawing. Theresa Brown won the rolling pin Phil Pirozzi made for the
RFK’s.

A Little More
Humor...This is a true story, proving how fascinating the mind of a six year old is. They think so logically.
A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to gather the building materials for his home.
She read, 'and so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said: 'Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?'
The teacher paused, then asked the class: 'And what do you think the man said?'
One little boy raised his hand and said very matter-of-factly ...'I think the man would have said - 'Well, I'll be damned!! A talking pig!'
The teacher had to leave the room.
Thanks to Jim Thomas for this additional humor.

A Simple Lesson in Socialism
An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had never failed a single student before, but had, one time, failed an entire class. That class had collectively agreed that socialism worked and that under its control, no one would be poor and no one would be rich. The system was a great equalizer.
The professor then said, “OK, in this class we will have an experiment on socialism. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same collective grade … so no one person will fail and no one person will receive an A.”
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. But, as the second test rolled around, the students who previously studied little had studied even less and the ones who previously studied hard decided they wanted a free ride, too, so they studied little. The second test’s class average was a D! No one was happy.
When the third test rolled around, the class average was an F. The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name calling all resulted in ill feelings, and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. All failed the class, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because: “When the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great. But when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.”

From the District Director:
It’s hard to believe how fast time is passing by. April already and that means we have our daily chores to perform and in addition we need to make time to enjoy our motorcycles and trikes. We need to get the everyday items taken care of so we can have more time to ride.
Keystone Rally: The Keystone State Rally plans continue to proceed along nicely and the staff feels that this will be the best one yet.
We have a lot of exciting, fun activities planned. Tom and Renee, will be visiting your Chapter soon, if they haven’t already done so to explain the activities in more detail.
As in years past we will be looking for help and participation from ALL CHAPTERS. This is the only way our Rally will be a success and everyone can enjoy it. SO REMEMBER WHEN SOMEONE ASKS YOU TO HELP JUST SAY “YES”.
The Rally Registration form has been sent out to all the Chapter Directors, Assistant Directors, and appears on the PA web page as well as being included in this month’s newsletter, so Register early and avoid the rush.
Just a reminder that again this year as last year “TO COMPETE IN ANY RALLY EVENT, YOU MUST BE FULLY REGISTERED FOR THE RALLY “, EX: Bike Show, Light Show, Chapter Competitions, Hospitality Room and COY Competition.
<NO FULL REGISTRATIONS WILL BE SOLD AT THE RALLY>
You should have received your new listing of Hotels/Motels and Campgrounds in the Johnstown area. These have been sent out to the Chapter Directors and Assistant Directors, and are available for downloading on the District’s website at
www.gwrrapadist.org.
Rally Raffle Tickets: This year our fundraiser will again be a “CASH BONANZA” with 40 chances to win. There will be (2) $1,000.00 winners, (2) $500.00 winners, (4) $250.00 winners, (10) $100.00 winners and (22) $50.00 winners.
Your Chapter Director has received the tickets and should have already distributed them to EVERY member of the Chapter. This is the only way the tickets will be sold. There is no reason why EVERY CHAPTER cannot sell all 200 tickets if they put the same effort into selling the District Tickets that they do in raising money for other charities.
The tickets will sell for $5.00 each and we are asking ALL the chapters to support this fundraiser for 2009. In addition, 50% of the net profits will be divided among the 24 chapters based on the number of tickets each sold to do with as they see fit. So the more tickets the chapter sells the bigger their percent of return in the final distribution.
Someone Special Award: Do not forget to submit your nomination for the SOMEONE SPECIAL AWARD. We have already received three nominations and are looking for 21 more. Nominations are to be submitted to us no later than July 17. There are many deserving individuals out there, so please take a few minutes and submit that individual’s story to be considered for the Someone Special Award. We should receive entries from every Chapter.
Food Drive: We have selected the West End Food Pantry in Johnstown as the organization that we will be supporting with a non-perishable food drive as part of our Keystone State Rally.
We will be looking for support from ALL OUR CHAPTERS to make sure this very worthy event is a real success. You folks did a Great Job last year and we are hoping for the same this year.

From the Northwest Assistant District Directors
Dana & Danise Hartle
Good Bye Old Man Winter and Hello Springtime
Taking liberty with John Paul Young's 1978 song "Love is in the Air" I would suggest "Spring is in the air, everywhere I look around. Spring is in the air, every sight and every sound".
April started a bit slow to allow the bikes out of the garage but when it opened its doors to sun and warmth it provided an abundance of both. I went with Mel Lufsey, ACD PA-I to Chapter D's gathering and we both had a great time. Sunday April 26th was a great day to go riding. Sun and temps in the mid 80's. PA-I CD's Tom and Lois Conner and members Ray and Doreen Snyder accompanied Danise and I for the day. We visited the Mall Show that Chapters P & D had in Robinson Twp Mall and then headed off to Seneca Pa to visit Chapter N's show at the Cranberry Mall. We had a great day of riding and visiting our fellow chapters and checking out their bikes. Great job on presenting our's.
By the time this comes out it will be too late for me to encourage you to visit Chapter I's Mall Show in Dubois PA as it is May 3rd. It should not be too late to let you know that Chapter O is having a Mall Show on May 17th at the Indiana Mall in Indiana PA. Check out their web page for more details at
www.pachaptero.com.
Chapter G is encouraging everyone to get their reservations in for All Chapters West. The event is filling up and every indication is that we are going to have a GREAT time. Come and be part of the fun in the Northwest corner of our district. The flyer is available on the districts web page at
www.gwrrapadist.org.
I want to congratulate the 14 members who completed the Horizon's Training course and the 5 new leadership trainers who completed their leadership raining by helping to present the Horizon's Program. It was a great weekend of learning and fun.
May is Motorcycle Awareness month so do your part to teach your friends and neighbors about our sport and to ask them to look twice and be aware that we are out there. Our lives are in their hands.

PA District Trainers:
Success !
Pennsylvania saw 14 new graduates of the GWRRA Horizon’s program this week end. The Assistant District Director’s Jake and Cheryl Lewis were in attendance as were 12 members from other chapters. Fun was had by all and despite the cold and wind on Saturday, class went on with 4 new instructors providing the training. We now have Linda Coene, Buddy Thompson, Jan Sterba and Kim Ferland as members of the Leadership Training Division. Wayne Ferland, LTD Instructor, was there to provide training on one of the modules also. Congratulations go out to the instructors and to Don & Kathy Weaver, Joe and Donna Crytser, Tom and Lois Connor, Randy and Deb Rupert, Mel & Jodi Lufsey, Dave Arneman and Jim & Cathy Schantz. Your chapters will benefit from your dedication, hard work and learning that you did this weekend.
I urge all Chapter Directors to look at their chapter members at the next gathering. Make it a priority to see who might benefit from this great training program: new members, people who YOU think might be moving into positions in the next couple of years, or those who are moving up and have not attended a Horizons. Write down those names, your chapter and send them off to us. We will do the rest, we will contact the ADD to set up training, get instructors lined up and schedule it. YOUR chapter will benefit tremendously if YOU will do this. Thank you.

From the Region Directors:
Wing Ding Schedule and Volunteer Request
Your Northeast Region Directors WANT YOU!
Because we were so successful last year, we have the dubious honor of organizing this year’s Grand Parade and Light Show in Tulsa. Whereas we were the luckiest region in the world last year to have the most number of volunteers, because Wing Ding was on the East Coast in Greenville, SC; we don’t anticipate that luxury this year. We understand the heart is willing but the budget isn’t. This year will prove to be our most challenging year ever. But we will step up and make it work, with quality rather than quantity.
That is why it is most important that our District Directors contact the Chapters and ask for volunteers at Tulsa, on our behalf. We would like to request that the DD’s compile a volunteer list of those who will be going to Wing Ding and would be willing to volunteer to work a couple of hours at the Grand Parade and/or the Light Show.
The Grand Parade Staging will be on Saturday, July 4th from 3:00 – 5:00 PM . The parade will begin at 5:00 PM SHARP! We will need volunteers at both the beginning and the end points. The Light Show will be held on Thursday, July 2nd. Classification will take place from 7:00 – 9:00 pm; the parade will start at 9:30 pm and judging and awards will follow at 10:00 pm. Remember, this is a major responsibility for our region. We need everyone to step up and help!
Regards,
Lorraine & Earl

The combined mall show between Chapters P & D had a good showing of Gold Wings for the general public. Not as many as in years past, but enough to make a good showing. Chapter D was represented by Chris & Linda Coene and Brownie & June Statler. Chapter D was also represented by a few visitors to the mall show to lend our support. Visitors from other chapters were also in attendance as well as Dana & Danise Hartle, our NW Assistant District Directors who were accompanied by members of Chapter I.

MS Escape to the Lake - June 6 & 7
By: Mike Ammerman
I want to thank everyone who have signed up to assist with the annual MS Escape to the Lake bicycle ride. Because of the route change this year, we will meet at the Diary Queen on Rt. 108 going into Slippery Rock. This is only 0.7 mile from the Slippery Rock exit on I-79. Please be there by 7:00 a.m. The bicyclists will be leaving Moraine State Park at 7:30 a.m., but trying to get all the bicyclists and motorcyclists into Moraine would be a logistical nightmare. That is why I’m having you meet me at the Diary Queen. Sorry, I don’t think the Diary Queen will be open at that time.
We will then proceed on the regular bicycle route, which will cross Rt. 108 at the Diary Queen. If you have any questions, please call me at 412-795-6685 (home) or 412-779-8943 (cell). I will go over the last minute details at the May gathering. I will also be sending out some information via e-mail prior to the ride and will try to have hardcopies for the May gathering.
Remember, this is a rain or shine event. Here’s hoping it’s the latter and not the first.
